I love reading, writing and history. So I decided that it would be a great idea if I combined all of these things and wrote historical fiction.
Soon after deciding this I happened to be in my local library and chanced upon a book called Flashman by George MacDonald Fraser. I stood in the book stack and read page after page. I noticed it getting darker. I glanced at the book. I had read about a third of it. I was hooked. It was like an epiphany.
The Flashman series seems to me be the best historical writing around. I have never found anything to match it. However, I have found some other writers of historical fiction who I really enjoy.
In no particular order these are: Simon Scarrow, Ben Kane, Rosemary Sutclliff, Bernard Cornwall, Rose Tremain, Henry Treece and Frans Gunnar Bengtsson.
